LG HR400: A Blu-ray Player with a TV Tuner and 160GB Hard Drive
Author: martin // Category: Blu-RayThe Korean consumer electronics maker LG has recently introduced their new LG HR400, a Blu-ray player with a DVB-T and analog TV Tuner with a 160 GB hard drive to record programs. The presence of these special features makes the LG HR400 more interesting.
The main features of the LG HR400 include 1080p output including 1080/24p, 1080p DVD upscaling, Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD, DTS re-encoder, Instant Tray Open that opens within 5 seconds, Quick BD Booting of about 19 seconds which depending on disc, DVB-T and analog hybrid tuner, 8- day DVB-T Electronic Program Guide, Video playback via USB 2.0 and a Piano black finish.
When the LG HR400 is connected to the Internet via its Ethernet port, it allows the BD Live 2.0 functionality to perform. HDMI 1.3 outputs and the necessary related internal hardware allow for 1080p, video playback with 24FPS as an option for movies. A USB 2.0 port allows for playing media from inserted USB thumb drives or other external drives. Both optical and coaxial audio outputs are accounted for. The HR400 will stream media over a user’s network. The LG HR400 is a profile 2.0 player capable of recording to both DVDs and Blu-rays; the power button glowing red if a DVD is in the drive and blue for a Blu-ray.
LG claims a speedy 19 second disc load time after the disc drawer has closed, plus DTS-HD and Dolby TrueHD audio decoding. The LG HR400 player supports not only Blu-ray discs but also DVD, DVD Dual Layer, DVD-R and data CD/DVD with MP3, WMA, PNG, DivX HD, DivX, WMV files. The LG HR400 also ensures to upconvert DVD to near-HD quality. The hard disk of the LG HR400 can hold between 43 to 477 hours of programming depending on the quality setting, while an 8-day electronic program guide for the DVB-T tuner allows them to set recordings. The new LG HR400, a sleek machine which includes several top-end features is now available at an affordable price.

This is nice in theory but it misses a couple of key points: 1) The YouTube functionality with the newest firmware (7) is broken so it returns the error “network congestion” even when other features (like firmware updates) work.
2) Bluray/DVD menus work nicely through HDMI cable but the Freeview and HDD menus do not. The player will always try to play via HDMI even though it can’t so the only way to access all features is via SCART (you must unplug the HDMI cable).
3) The final point here is that it does not have a recordable DVD drive. It only has playback option but not DVD or BluRay record
