Philips PET940 Portable DVD Player: Outrageously beautiful, but with the Competence to match it Performance

For those of you out there who believe that portable DVD players couldn’t get any more desirable, you need to have a look at the PET940, and it can safely be said that you will be really floored with its sumptuous design and aesthetic look. The PET940 is actually one of three new portables in Philips Electronics’ latest range, and it manages to boast of an iPod dock, in addition to functioning as a digital photo frame. Despite all of its credentials, at its core the player is designed specifically with video viewing in mind. As a result, the player features a traditional clam shell design, which evidently protects your screen from scratches as well as endowing it with a good deal of mobility.

The unit boasts of a 9in, 16:9 LCD screen embedded into the top section, which is fairly large by portable standards, but for all its good traits it has a relatively moderate resolution of 640 x 234 pixels meaning that you have to make do with average image quality. Nevertheless the larger screen remains a clear advantage over many other prominent models, such as the Sony DVP-FX 870, with notably smaller screen sizes. The fact that it’s an anti-glare panel however is a saving grace, as you no longer have to bear with annoying reflections that have such a repelling effect on the viewing experience.

The player is also quite generous when it comes to offering you a useful selection of accessories, and includes an AC mains adaptor, a cigarette lighter adaptor for the car, a composite/stereo audio to minijack lead, apart from an adorable silver remote. Then, the Philips PET940 comes equipped with a small selection of sockets as well including two headphone jacks for shared listening, a combined composite/stereo audio minijack output and a USB port. The USB feature is a real advantage as it enables you to play music and photo files from memory devices, but not MP3 players or PCs.
