Pretty similar to a VCR in its working, a DVD recorder records TV programmes and play pre-recorded videos, the only difference being that it uses discs instead of tapes. It is superior to VCR in the sense that with a DVD recorder, you can skip around a disc easily through disc menus and chapter marks of the CD. A DVD recorder could be with or without a tuner, though new recording devices with a tuner now have to include a digital ATSC tuner. Also, some DVD recorders support all five of the single-layer recordable DVD formats (DVD-R/RW, DVD+R/RW, and DVD-RAM) but some do not. Mainly, there are three types of DVD recorders – DVD-R/RW, DVD+R/RW and DVD-RAM. DVD-R/RW allows the user to record onto use – once DVDs or rewritable discs – which you can record as many times as you like. Similar to this type is DVD+R/RW recorders that work with rewritable and use-once DVDs. Unlike both the first kinds is the DVD-RAM DVD recorder, which is similar to a removable computer hard drive. With DVD-RAM, you can pause live TV, watch another programme on the disc at the same time as recording and watch your show while it’s still being recorded.
