Panasonic has send a message to its rivals by launching the first ever ‘Blu-ray’ recorder. This player is having built in free satellite tuners also. The Panasonic DMR-BS850’s hard disc is having a 500 GB capacity and also has a Blu-ray burner which is compatible to all the varieties of recordable disc’s media. This will be available in the market of UK from around the next June. The DMR-BS850 is also equipped with a seven-day EPG which is searchable, two ‘HD’ digital tuners and is even compatible with HD telly which displays the HD channels from free satellite’s hatchling HD service. Sigmatek declared their first Blu-ray product which is a Blu-ray Disc player that is the SBR 1000. The affordable cost of the player makes it one of the cheapest players in the European market by a large margin. The player will support 1080p60 and 1080p24 output through a HDMI v1.3 link. Though HD is the new standard and you will be hard pressed to find a new television that isn’t HD Ready, less than 50% of Western European households have made the switch into high definition, according to a new study by Futuresource Consulting (see graph below). When it comes to Blu-ray, far fewer have made the change, less than 10% to be exact, and this is including PS3 sales in the mix. The UK leads the bunch with the highest percentage of HDTV and Blu-ray ownership, while France, Spain, Germany and Italy trail behind; or far behind in the case of Germany and Italy. (more…)

Pioneer is out to address an important grievance that customers have against it. Customers are apparently peeved at the seemingly steep price of the Pioneer’s BDP-LX71, which prevented them from experiencing its amazing performance and taking advantage of its state-of the art features. Pioneer is determined to appease this section of customers and consequently has come out with the entry-level BDP-51FD Blu-ray Player. LG has recently come up with the BD300, which exclusively deals with the Blu-ray format, much unlike what was observed when the format war between the Blu-ray and HD DVD was in full swing. During that time LG committed the folly of combining the two formats to produce the disaster called BD100.
